Injectable muscle relaxants treat dynamic wrinkles, formed when muscles contract, if untreated they will permanently damage the skin to become static lines. The injections work by relaxing the wrinkle-causing muscles through a long acting blockage of the neurotransmitter bewteen the nerve ending and the contracting muscle. The muscle is not damaged, the nerve is not damaged. What happens is you can not use the muscle as much. Your frown or squint is softer and you have an improved appearance. You gradually notice smoothing of wrinkles and you prevent wrinkles from forming again as fast because the muscles learn not to contract as much over time. The effect takes 3 to 5 days to begin and around 7 -10 days you will see the full effect. The effects can last up to 4 months. Done well it is virtually painless as extremely fine needles are used. There is a slight risk of bruising and in some circumstances muscle relaxation may cause a temporary laxity of some areas of the face and eyelids. This is not common and will always resolve.
Injectable dermal fillers treat static wrinkles. Injectable dermal fillers are placed beneath the wrinkle or fold to plump up the depression. They are commonly used in Nasolabial Folds (from the nose to the lips), Marionette Lines (from the corner of the mouth down) and Vertical Lip Lines (small lines from the lips going up). A popular use of injectable dermal fillers is for creating volume and definition of the lips. Dermal fillers are administered through a few injections by medically qualified staff. Your may have a topical (cream) or local anaesthetic injection to help numb the area being treated. Treatments usually last for at least 6 months, but can last up to 12-15 months depending on the area and the product used. Normal activities can generally be resumed immediately following facial injections. Any injection can cuase temporary and localised effect in the area of injection. Cosmetic injection may infrequently cause swelling, pain, burning, bruising or redness, but these pass quickly, There are rarely more longer lasting adverse effects possible.
